Reading Classical Literature Supports Children's Development

In the Oxford University Press report "Gift of Words 2021 - The Power of Reading" 49% of survey participants said that:

"reading for school puts their child off from reading for pleasure."

This is something that so many parents and carers of young children can relate to.  Structured reading schemes and repetitive texts, while very necessary in the process of learning to read, can leave children feeling uninspired.  At worst, the process of learning to read in the way that literacy is being taught in schools can unintentionally create reluctant readers.  So if you're feeling weary of reading Biff, Chip and Kipper, you're not alone.

The good news is that carefully chosen children's literature classics can help reignite curiosity, imagination and a genuine love of reading.

The Role of the Parent in a Child's Reading Journey

For most children, the first experience of reading joy happens with parents and carers.  Daily reading together provides a powerful bonding opportunity while also supporting emotional and intellectual development.  Listening to stories helps children to build verbal confidence and vocabulary; express thoughts and emotions more clearly; improve concentration and mindfulness and develops imagination and creativity.

Parents and carers play a crucial role by selecting storybooks that align with a child's emotional and intellectual needs.  Thoughtfully chosen books to read for children's development are easier for young minds to process than real-life situations, offering safe, fictional spaces where children can explore ideas, challenges and feelings.

Why Children's Literature Classics Still Matter

Classic children's books offer something truly special that sets them apart from contemporary children's fiction.  Children's literature classics often use richer language and a wider vocabulary than many modern titles.  Many of the most popular children's classics were written in the Regency and Victorian eras, and through to the early twentieth century when print was the primary storytelling medium, and so needed to rely on more descriptive language to convey meaning, atmosphere and emotion.  This depth of language allows children to encounter more complex themes as they fully immerse themselves in imaginative worlds.  They may even recognise their own experience in historical or fictional settings.  Classic stories enable children to step outside their own reality while still seeing reflections of themselves within the narrative - a powerful tool for empathy and understanding.

Balancing the Classics with Popular Contemporary Children's Books

Of course, popular children's literature absolutely has its place in the child's reading journey.  Allowing children some choice is very important, nay essential to keep reading enjoyable and pressure-free.  However, many children initially shy away from the classics because they perceive them as "too hard".  This is the moment where gentle encouragement makes all the difference.  In my own experience, children who at first resist classic literature frequently become completely absorbed after just a few chapters.

That said, not every book suits every reader.  If a story doesn't resonate, it's perfectly fine to put it down and try something else and children should be encouraged to make up their own minds about a book.  Not finishing a book is not a failure - just as it's not a failure to dislike a popular film or television series.  The goal is enjoyment rather than obligation.
